Electing climate champions to Phoenix’s public utility
The Salt River Project (SRP) is one of the largest public utilities in the country providing electricity to over 1 million customers in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the county, is a hotspot for data center development, and is a major battleground for climate leaders up-and-down-the-ballot. The SRP’s board of directors is elected in an incredibly unique and unjust way where several of its members are elected only by landowners, and the more land you own, the more votes you get. Despite this, climate leaders have slowly won more and more of the Board’s seats. We’re working to help them achieve a majority this year that could implement a clean energy plan for the utility and protect ratepayers from unjust hikes caused by data center growth. Here’s who we’re backing:
- Sandra Kennedy for Salt River Project Board President: Kennedy serves on the SRP Board and is running for the leadership position to set the agenda for the utility. Kennedy previously served on the Arizona Corporation Commission (the first and only African American woman to hold a statewide elected office in Arizona!) and has been a champion for transitioning off of fossil fuels.
- Casey Clowes for Salt River Project Board Vice President: Clowes serves on the SRP Board and is running for the second leadership position. She is a community lawyer, advocate and is a youth activist who helped lead a local Sunrise chapter.
- Lupe Conchas for Salt River Project Board District 4: Conchas is a city councilor in Glendale, who previously served on the school board. He is running a strong campaign championing lower rates for ratepayers.
- Ken Clark for Salt River Project Board District 6: Clark served in the state legislature from 2015-2019 and is the former director of the State Energy Office.
- Melissa Harlan for Salt River Project Board District 8: Harlan is a small business owner of a tea shop and has served on a number of local commissions in Tempe.
- Regina Gutierrez for Salt River Project Council District 8: Gutierrez has worked in financial operations, including more than two decades at Arizona State University, and is running because she believes everyday people should have a say in their energy decisions.
- Randy Miller for Salt River Project Council District 8: Miller is a software engineer who has served on the SRP since 2018 and has been a champion of clean energy and affordable rates on the board.
- Krista O’Brien for Salt River Project Board At-Large Seat 12: O’Brien works at Arizona State’s Global Futures Laboratory and is running to ensure the SRP is transparent in its decisions affecting ratepayers.
- Kathy Mohr-Almeida for Salt River Project Board At-Large Seat 14: Mohr-Almeida is an educator and community leader who serves currently on the SRP, where she has consistently fought for affordability and transparency for ratepayers.
